Robert’s 1969 Maserati Indy is a beefy Italian grand tourer. Only 400 or so of this series were hand-built by Vignale. It’s a 160mph porterhouse steak, sizzling out of the broiler, still blue rare.
Solid, confident, and only slightly theatrical, the Maser has pop-up headlights, a long fastback profile, and that Kamm tail finish. There’s lots of glass, and a classic wedge that’s just perfect when parked next to your Learjet. It smells like leather, gas and vinyl. I drive it wearing RayBans and old stringback gloves. It gets looks, but it doesn’t care. Attitude without bravado.
The thing starts on the button after six pumps of the pedal and a proper 3/4-to-the-floor crank. It LOVES gas -which is no wonder, since it’s powered by the legendary Maser 4.2-litre quad cam V8, fed by four Weber downdraft carburetors. The sound is absolutely delicious.
What a ground pounder. What a thing.
